This blue-grass jam band got its start in Boulder, Colorado and quickly pushed their way out of the mountains and into the ears of jam-band lovers across the nation. The String Cheese Incident (SCI) consists Michael Kang (electric guitar), Michael Travis (drums), Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar), Kyle Hollingsworth (piano) and Keith Moseley (bass guitar). A late night food fight at a local bar involving cheese was the basis for the band taking on the name The String Cheese Incident. In 1993, SCI began playing at ski resorts throughout Colorado in exchange for lift tickets. This allowed the band to gain popularity and would lead them to start their own record label, SCI Fidelity. They released their debut album in 1997, titled Born on the Wrong Planet. Later that year they released their self-titled album, A String Cheese Incident, which told the story of one concert played at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, Colorado.
Then taking a year to refine their sound and lyricism, they released, in 1998, 'Round the Wheel, which displayed the band's sound was evolving. SCI then took the opportunity to use their new popularity to tour and continue to spread their name. From 1998 to 2001 the band toured throughout the United States, playing over 500 shows. Working with a new guest producer, in 2001, SCI released their third studio album titled Outside Inside. This album showed a transition from blue-grass to more classic rock styles. Their next album, released October 2003, Untying the Not, the band added electronic and trance influence to their music. Then, in October 2005, SCI returned to their roots and released an album recorded in Boulder, Colorado titled One Step Closer. This album has a strong balance between their blue-grass roots and their evolution into electronic and trance.
