Slightly Stoopid
Few bands can boast the long-standing popularity that is held by Slightly Stoopid. The California-based group formed in the 90’s remains at the forefront of the music scene. Their popularity likely owes to their blend of music that is unlike any others; the band lists rock, reggae, blues, hip-hop, metal and funk as inspiring genres. Some would even say that Slightly Stoopid has manufactured a genre of their own.
From humble beginnings of a two-man act (Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald), the band was discovered by Sublime lead-singer Bradley Nowell and immediately signed to his label. They met immediate success, producing albums that featured famous acts from the beginning. Their unique sound and style brought them instant recognition. One only needs to hear a single track to hear the incredible talent seeping out from every individual. Listening to this band is an experience, not a passive event. Slightly Stoopid has produced a total of ten albums, an impressive feat for any group. While they stay true to their particular style, they have never ceased to reinvent themselves with each new release.
Somehow, they remain relevant without selling out. It is easy to see evidence of this; they still play shows all over the country in sold-out venues. Even though fans would say their success is due to their amazing talent, they give all the credit to the fans. McDonald says, “They (the fans) make it worth our while – when we go out and people are having that good of a time, the energy goes back and forth. Just a good time – we rely on each other’s energy.”
