Henry Steinway, better known as DJ RL Grime, has recently taken the trap movement to a whole new level. With heavy emphasis on hip-hop and bass, this Los Angeles native has made a respectable name for himself in the midst of huge criticism toward the trap-style genre. Responding to arguments stating that trap music is simply stolen from rap, RL Grime replied that trap “[isn’t] lifted or stolen—it’s just inspired by it.” Unlike a lot of trap artists today, RL Grime fully utilizes his mixing and tonal skills to create trap music that goes beyond ordinary, remixed beats. “When I’m making music, I just want it to sound different from what’s popular. I just keep honing in on my own sound.” In a short period of time, RL Grime has been recognized and appreciated for his outlook on trap music and has gained widespread acclaim.
Beginning in 2011, RL Grime signed with WeDidIt music label and released his first EP, Grapes. Shortly after, in 2012, he released two ground-breaking hits, remixes of “Mercy” by Kanye West and “Satisfaction” by Benny Benassi, that each received over a million plays on SoundCloud. That same year, he released his next album High Beams EP under Fools Gold Records, featuring rapper Problem. In 2013, RL Grime released another major hit single as a remix to “Love Sosa” by Chief Kief that has gained extreme popularity among all EDM listeners. More recently, in an attempt to avoid being labeled as a “generic trap” artist, RL Grime let his versatility shine through with his single “Because of U,” featuring a lighter melody and soft singing, yet still incorporating his deep bass sound.
What many do not know is Steinway’s secret identity…Clockwork! RL Grime started playing under his Clockwork alias in high school as a small project, one he didn’t expect to take very far. Today, he plays under both Clockwork, delivering more house and hardstyle sounds, as well as RL Grime. Steinway has worked with artists like Diplo, Baauer, and Salva, whom he just finished his North American Tour of 2014 with in mid February. RL Grime will be appearing at Buku Music Festival back to back with Baauer with Clockwork set to appear at Snowball Music Festival, soon, in Colorado.
