As “One of rap’s most unique figures in recent memory,” according to MTV, Danny Brown has brought an individualistic and comedic spin to the rap scene. The rapper, Daniel Sewell was born March 16, 1981 in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up, he was extremely influenced by his father’s career as a House-style DJ and the colorful rhyming of Dr. Seuss read to him by his mother. Now 34 years old, Danny Brown has had an esteemed ability for rhyme and music starting from a very young age.
Growing up on the streets of Detroit, Danny Brown lived around a large community characterized by drug dealing and run-ins with the law. Taking great pride in Detroit as his hometown, he utilizes his life-experiences and being raised in the city as the backdrop for many of his songs. Brown is known for his distinctive, vintage-rock inspired look and high-pitched rapping style, as well as his inventive word play that hilariously emphasizes outrageous and ironic rap-style boasting.
Danny Brown began rapping, officially, in 2003 with the formation of the rap trio Rese’vor Dogs. However, after dealings with the law and serving time, he began to take his rap career more seriously after leaving jail in 2007. In 2010, Brown recorded his first album Hawaiian Snow in collaboration with rapper Tony Yayo under G-unit. Later that year, he recorded his first solo independent studio album entitled The Hybrid. The Hybrid was Brown’s first individual compilation where he claims he “found his voice,” thus his distinctive rapping style was officially acclaimed. The following year, in 2011, Danny Brown signed with Fool’s Gold Records and released his next album, XXX, for free download. Soon after, the new album was named “best hip-hop album of the year” by Spin magazine.
In the past Danny Brown has worked with names such as A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, and Purity Ring, and has toured with artists like A-Trak and Baauer. He recently released his latest album Old on October 8, 2013, which acquired much attention. This album has been considered, by many, to standout from the shadow of modern, mainstream rap by combining both new and old styles. Danny Brown began a worldwide tour celebrating Old in late February, and is expected to make tour stops at music festivals including Buku and Hangout Music Festivals. To listen to Old, visit:
