There’s no doubt that our generation has initiated this new age hippie movement. This new era of experimental, groovy and electronic fusion is a great explanation of why our music taste has so many similarities to the 70’s and 80’s. Daft Punk is a great representation of this incredible new spin on old sounds. Their thoroughly modern disco sound consists of a blend of house, funk, electro and techno. This French duo really caught the attention of the world in the early 2000’s but their music is still recognized and loved today. It’s just one of those bands that you can play on repeat and never get sick of.
Daft Punk consists of Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter who are just as unique and funky as their music. They wear shiny droid costumes at every live show and express themselves as something much more far out than earthlings. Despite their robotic costumes and electro sound, their music is only sometimes robotic; Daft Punk was as influenced by rock bands like AC/DC as they were by classic disco acts. De Homem-Christo and Bangalter met in a Paris school in 1987 and eventually formed an indie rock band, Darling. The group went nowhere but once Bangalter and de Homem-Christo truly fell in love with house music, they started experimenting with all different sounds and formulated the song, “Da Funk” which sold 30,000 copies. The duo became Daft Punk, releasing its critically acclaimed debut album Homework in 1997 which is what really made them blast off in their career. The 2001 release of the album Discovery was even more successful which included everyone’s favorite songs, "One More Time", "Digital Love", and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger".
Daft Punk toured throughout 2006 and 2007 and released the live album Alive 2007, which won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album. Later on, Random Access Memories led to five Grammy wins in 2014 including Album of the Year, as well as Record of the Year for "Get Lucky". Daft Punk is noted for its elaborate live shows, in which incredible visual elements and effects are incorporated with the music. The group is known for its emphasis on using visual and story components associated with their musical productions. Daft Punk is also known for its use of disguises while in public and while performing. Although its quite tragic not knowing if they will ever perform live again, it’s all part of the mystery and magic that draws us into their mesmerizing music.
