Music is both an art and a science, which is what makes it so special. Music uses mathematical principles and reason, but is also blended with creative thinking and inspiration. This perfect blend of creativity and logic guarantees music to be both intellectually stimulating and also quite an enlightening experience.
What are we experiencing when we listen to music? Because of the use of science and mathematics, we know sound happens when an object vibrates. For example, when your finger plucks a string on a guitar, the string vibrates and disturbs the air around it, making an invisible sound wave. You hear the sound when the wave travels through the air to your ear (Friedman, Marcia). It’s truly incredible, the infinite possibilities of musical expressions that can be created through this complex interaction of sounds, tempo, and pitch. As we listen to this interaction, we can compare it to the interaction of knowledge, imagination, and inspiration that flows from our favorite music.
Music is more than just an arranged set of noises. Music is an explosive expression of humanity. It is the means of expressing yourself and using that as a link to connect with others. Music is a means of finding compatibility within your culture and exploring other cultures. “Music is a force that can unite humans even as they are separated by distance and culture” (Friedman, Marcia). Music brings people together in the most unique way. Music is not something that can be understood by the mind, it is something that is truly felt within our souls. When you connect with someone who has similar music taste you are connecting with a special part of them. Science can explain many things but it cannot necessarily create them. Science can explain the way music works but only the vibration and love within us can create it.
