Important Artists to Catch At Outside Lands
Written by Zoe Whitley
Writing this article turned out to be a daunting task considering the stunning lineup for Outside Lands this year. With artists like Elton John and Porter Robinson, it was difficult to highlight just a few from this immensely talented lineup. However, all of the artists that are scheduled to serenade San Francisco are sure to put on fantastic sets.
If you have heard any of the tracks off of Kendrick Lamar’s newest album, To Pimp a Butterfly, you were probably excited to see his name on this year’s Outside Lands lineup. With the recent release of his fourth full length studio album, Kendrick has undeniably proven himself in the rap world. When you compare his sound from his 2010 album, Overly Dedicated, to his sound now, it is clear that he has really been experimenting and developing his work over the years, and it has definitely paid off. Many fans and critics consider To Pimp a Butterfly to be one of the best albums of the year. His use of a variety of instruments and his meticulously constructed lyrics really set him apart from other rappers.
Sky Ferreira, multi-talented goddess, will also be gracing San Francisco with her presence. The 22 year old was discovered after uploading demos of her own songs on Myspace. The common description of her music as being “synthpop” is an accurate depiction, although she does experiment with various instruments in different songs to create her unique sound. In all of her songs, she exhibits the impressive vocal range that she is capable of. Her most recent album, Night Time, My Time, attracted praise from critics and fans alike, and Rolling Stone named it the 5th best debut album of 2013. Sky is sure to put on a stunning performance for Outside Lands guests!
If you are looking for a funky set to get down to at the festival, Toro Y Moi is your man. Both a recording artist and a producer, Toro Y Moi has cranked out several mind-blowing albums since the release of his first full length album in 2010. His indisputable talent can be appreciated in each and every song. He is definitely very eclectic, and experimental, making every album a whole new experience. His newest album, What For?, was released on April 7. There are definitely some heavy funk vibes in this album, which I am loving. Be sure to experience it for yourself at Outside Lands!
Guests at Outside Lands will be lucky enough to witness a legendary live performance from multi-talented Mac Demarco. The 24 year old British Columbia native was a member of several bands throughout his high school years. During that time, he discovered the unique sound and style that are exhibited in his music today. In 2011 he moved to Montreal in order to pursue a career as a solo recording artist. Before he snagged the attention of his label, Captured Tracks, he earned money by paving roads and participating in medical experiments. Captured Tracks offered him the opportunity to release a full length studio album, 2, which caught the eye of many adoring fans. The release of his second studio album, Salad Days, offered fans even more material to love. His sound is utterly unique, from his vocals to his instrumental talents. In addition to singing, Mac plays guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums, impressive to say the least. While listening to his music, it is difficult to place his sound into one specific genre. His sound varies anywhere from indie rock to psychedelic pop, but no matter what you call it, it’s just plain wonderful. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the raw talent that Mac has to offer the world!
