Like it or not, drug use is largely prevalent at shows of all types and EDM shows and festivals are no exceptions. For their own reasons, many fans will attend under the influence of a controlled substance. Various arguments for both sides can be had about the safety of the crowd and the reputation of rave culture, but here’s the real scary part: many of those who are using these substances have no clue about the true nature of the chemical they’re ingesting or insufflating and that’s cause for alarm.

When an individual purchases a white powder or a piece of blotter paper, it could range from a simple rip-off (baking soda or blank blotter) or something incredibly dangerous. One example is para-Methoxyamphetamine, or PMA, which is aptly nicknamed “Death.” While often sold as MDMA, it can be life-threatening at common MDMA dosages, causing unpleasant hallucinations, hyperthermia, elevated heart rate, and convulsions. Blotter sold as LSD may carry 25i-NBOMe, which produces powerful visuals at proper doses, but often leads to seizure and cardiovascular stress as dose increases. An unknown white powder could possibly be exactly what you’re looking for, but taking it could be the last thing you ever do.

What can be done about show-goers endangering their lives by taking an unknown substance? Some feel that it is enough to know and trust your dealer, but do you trust the person they got it from? Do you trust or even know the person who had it before them? By far, the most effective way to protect yourself from taking a lethal chemical is to test the substance with an official testing kit. Various kits exist that test for various substances, the most common being the Marquis, which is designed to look for the presence of MDMA. To test, one places a small sample from his substance on a surface or in a test tube and adds a drop of the testing reagent. Based on what chemical the powder is, the kit may or may not show a colored chemical reaction. If there is no reaction or the mixture turns a color other than what you’re looking for, throw it out!

Your body is incredibly important – it’s the only place you have to live for the rest of your life. Taking care of it by knowing the substances you put into it will insure you’ll be around for the maximum amount of time. Whether you choose to use drugs at shows or not, the most important part about going to a show is having fun and sticking around to remember it.
