There is something to be said about listening to music in solitude; yes, something sensational about losing yourself to another realm where sound defines existence. And yet, isn’t experiencing an artist live, swallowed in a crowd of sweaty, dancing limbs the most incredible feeling in the world? Thus, the silent disco was born, giving participants the best of both worlds by integrating individuality with collective community.
UNITY Night, to take place June 3 at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom & the Other Side, is the fruition of one man’s collective vision to “unite” the community and the self. The three stage event including a silent disco on the patio and will showcase local musicians, live art installations, several inspirational, emerging companies, and of course, fans and friends alike.
Bass Feeds the Soul had the opportunity to speak with Matt Jensen, well known up-and-comer in the local music scene, founder of Lime Light Media productions, and proud papa of UNITY night.
Tell us about Lime Light Media productions, how long has the company been around and how did it get started?
It all started when I began in the music industry taking photos and making videos for upcoming local bands. Originally I only planned for it to be a medium through which I would share my work, but then it turned into a full on company that does photos, videos, concert promotion/event planning, editing and even music booking and management. It has been around since fall of 2013 and it has been growing ever since.
How long have you been throwing shows?
It began when I booked The JJ Evanoff Experience’s first headliner with JJ and Danny on May 28th, 2014. That was the first throw I can say I ever threw. JJ was ready for his first headlining event and I had an “in” at Cervantes from working there so much and networking with everyone as a videograpgher. From that moment on, everything started exploding with our careers, That was a turning point in my life; this was the future and environment I wanted to follow and pursue.
What inspired Unity night and what is the essence of the event?
The inspiration came after throwing my first Lime Light Media Production showcase on April 1, 2015. I was hanging on the back patio of the Other Side and noticed how much everyone enjoyed being outside in good weather talking and having fun. In that moment I saw the stage, knew there was a sound curfew but found away around it to add another stage, a silent disco on the back patio. I thought about how cool it would be and from there knew that I needed to book the Masterpiece Ballroom as well to make it a 3 stage dual sided event just like I had always imagined doing.
Anything special we should know about the show?
So many amazing people, fans, music, artists, and local companies will make it out. It’s all about the locals and embracing the amazing community we have around us. Get ready to make a lot of new friends, see many old ones, and to see a creative community in the most unique way imaginable.
Tell us a little bit about the artists performing, how did you build the lineup?
A lot of these acts are good friends of mine who I knew played music, so why not bring them out to play at a venue and event that is to my vision where they would be comfortable performing. There is a really cool act called Linear Symmetry. They are the first out-of-state band I have ever booked for a show, so this event is really special for numerous reasons. Each act is great for so many different reasons, so coming to the show will be the best way to see and hear them all!
Are you working with anyone to throw the show?
Ya this show has a lot of people working behind it. Amanda Wolf, who lives in Boulder also, will be working from the artistic side. She gets the cool merchandise companies and live painters, including herself, to come out and perform. Evan Carlton from Rage Colorado, The entire Bass Feeds The Soul Team, Matt from City2Snow, and Derek Donnell of Nocturne Entertainment are working on the promotion end of things along with my company as well. The guys are really amazing and have had a huge affect on the local community doing great things starting cool unique companie! The local companies attending are Candy Grind, Boulder Vapor House and Upstart Kombucha.
What is the mission of the event?
To give opportunity to the local music community to showcase their work. Everyone needs a chance to make the next step, so why not give that chance to someone who really deserves it and has the drive to make it happen? A lot of people want to sit back and let things come to them but I believe artists reaching out to take the chance are the ones who deserve it most!
If you could describe the evening in three words or less, what would they be?
Artistic, local, and magical
