We're all looking for an angle. Artists build the foundation for brand development, their “story”, to connect with listeners on multiple levels. Every collective, community, culture, organization, company, and individual has one; a story that is. Typically, these narratives are predictable, formulated, and produced with heavy consideration of public opinion. If I define myself in this way, will people like me?
We're all looking to understand. Human beings instinctively simplify and categorize. We mentally organize people by gender, color, age, race… even hair color, brand of shoes, etc. and associate characteristics with each for sorting and comprehension. Though efficient, it is well known assessing people by check-marked boxes is an inadequate, faulty system.
Periodically, revolutionaries like DJ / Producer Amber “Mija” Giles arise and rattle the system. She didn’t invent a story to please the masses; she was and will always be authentic Mija. Her motto, “fk a genre”, immaculately captures her defiance and refusal to be owned by standard constructions. Five months ago, Mija unleashed on Soundcloud “fk a genre”, an hour and twelve minute personification of its title.
The track is ridiculously diverse, oscillating from velvety deep house to grimy ultra womp and back again, boasting acoustic guitar riffs moments before a run of sweaty trap beats. Though she initially experimented exclusively with house music, Mija quickly abandoned the singular genre life. Thank her obsession with unpredictability for wicked compilations like her unedited recent release with Diplo and Friends.
“Can you tell us about the challenges of being a female DJ?” - said every journalist ever. Yes, Mija is a woman in an overwhelmingly male dominated industry. Yes, she has blue hair, and yes, her septum is pierced. Who cares? She sure as hell doesn’t. Here’s what matters: Mija is a phenomenal DJ. She displays technical expertise and extensive knowledge regarding music and what makes people move. Consistently playing festivals is her game and expanding her artistic ability from DJing to producing allows her to win. Mija is versed in whiskey, lives to celebrate existence, and it’s highly likely she prays to aliens and eats space icecream for breakfast.
Essentially, Mija is a dream come true. Since her notorious b2b sunrise set spontaneously initiated by Skrillex, Mija has been dropping pins all over the map, repping at illustrious festivals including Hangout Fest, TomorrowLand, Shambala and naturally, the Do LaB stage at Coachella. Though big crowds are Mija’s jive, she’s making an exception to play 1up-Colfax, Denver’s most beloved venue for emerging electronic music [brought to you by theHundred Presents & Souls in Action]. Love Mija as much as we do? Be sure to also catch her set at Colorado’s infamous Red Rocks Ampitheater July 2 with Zeds Dead.
