What is your essence? A festival communicates its essence in a multitude of ways including the fest’s lineup, chosen location, and overall experience. Year after year, Lolla’s lineup has been out of control, showcasing a dynamic fusion of genres and talent. The fest caters to a slightly different crowd than Billboard’s Artist 100, instead resonating with what I like to call the “indie” crowd.
LINEUP VIBE: The term "indie", short for independent, was used to describe artists not signed by major labels. Today, the word serves a more extensive purpose, often encompassing an entire type of music. It has become a catch all we somehow all understand but cannot explain. Lollapalooza embodies this movement, its lineup featuring many artists who are regularly tossed into the “indie” category.
LOCATION VIBE: Unlike many US big name festivals, Lollapalooza takes place in the heart of a metropolis. There is no camping at Lolla. In fact, tents are a prohibited item right up there with selfie sticks! Though camping is out, visiting the farmers market, dancing through the venue one mile end to end, and hitting the many after parties (100+ local artists), are highly recommended.
The festival has changed significantly since its inception in 1991 by Perry Ferrel of Jane’s Addiction. After its discontinuation in 97’, Lolla returned six years later with vengeance, touring through the United States. It was not until more recently in the festival’s history that Chicago solidified as the festival’s hub. At present, Lollapalooza takes place annually in the United States, Chile, and Brazil. Last November, Lolla announced it would take over Berlin, Germany in September of this year.
END OF HISTORY LESSON.
EXPERIENCE VIBE: Let’s be real and give you what you really want. Below are several must see acts for Lollapalooza 2015. They are in descending order based on number of Soundcloud followers. Check out all the Aussies!
